Cafés and terraces in Brașov's old town: a famous café from a century ago, today's places with a story, and how to choose depending on the moment.

In Brașov's old town you'll find cafés and terraces around Council Square, on Republicii Street and on the side streets; those on the square are the liveliest, while those on the side streets are usually quieter. Below you'll also find a few places with a story.
The “Elite” café opened in 1905 on the ground floor of the Czell Palace on Council Square, the building that today houses the Brașov branch of the National Bank of Romania. It had a street terrace and a summer terrace towards the Graft, and in 1908 it hosted a chess tournament, being a meeting place for Brașov's chess players. The story, told at length by Historia magazine, shows that café life on Council Square goes back a long way.
